Four fire engines sent to Elmley Nature Reserve on Sheppey after ‘heavy smoke’ warning from wildfire

Crews are tackling a wildfire at a nature reserve after a warning of “heavy smoke” in the area.

Four fire engines have been sent to Elmley National Nature Reserve on Sheppey at around 1.30pm today (May 30).

It is understood that Kent Police are also in attendance.

A spokesperson from the fire service said: “Crews are advising people living or travelling near the Shellness and Leysdown areas on the Isle of Sheppey to keep windows and doors closed due to heavy smoke coming from a wildfire at Elmley National Nature Reserve.

“Four fire engines are currently in attendance and crews are making good progress using wildfire equipment.

“Please share this information with anyone in the area who may not have access to the internet.”

It comes just after a crews were called to reports of grass alight in a field near Shellness Road in Leysdown last night (May 29).
