Kent Junior B Cup Final match report: Dover Rangers 0 Old Roan 2 at Chatham Town’s Bauvill Stadium

Dominant Old Roan beat Dover Rangers in their Kent Junior B Cup final at Chatham’s Bauvill Stadium to complete a memorable treble on Saturday.

Having lost just once all season and already having been victorious in the Bromley & South London League Premier Division and the Ron Pope Cup, two excellent first-half goals from Harry Simmons and Jack Sproul ensured three is the magic number for Old Roan as it ended 2-0.

Canterbury & District Saturday League champions Dover Rangers headed into the showdown with a perfect record in their division.

But Old Roan player-boss Ronnie Mulock said: “We’re also unbeaten in the league.

“We have lost one game all season so we weren’t worried about them. We’ve had our own good season.

“In the first half, I thought we were unbelievable.

“In the second half, we didn’t perform too well but, at 2-0 up, we were just cruising, really, so I thought it was an unbelievable performance from the boys.

“That’s the treble ticked off and one game lost all season.”

The opening minutes proved fairly uneventful as both teams got used to the warm conditions - but Old Roan were the side who settled the quickest.

They first threatened through man-of-the-match midfielder Ted Woodward before Rangers No.1 Jordan Wing appeared to tip over full-back Tommy Newman’s right-footed effort in the 11th minute, only for a goal kick to be awarded.

Wing also got well behind a long-range drive from Woodward.

But Old Roan, conquerors of Stansfeld FC (3-2), Gravesend FC (9-0), AFC Oldsmiths FC (4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw) and Bligh Sports (8-2) to get to the final, went in front on 18 minutes.

Striker Simmons delivered a top-class half-volley finish with his weaker foot to put them in command.

Dover finally created their first clear-cut opening as Bradley Baker dragged his 28th-minute strike wide from around 25 yards out.

Old Roan were still the outfit firmly in command, however, and after Jonny Eades nodded over another fine Woodward delivery, they doubled their lead with 35 minutes played.

A busy Wing got a hand to it but wasn’t able to keep out midfielder Sproul’s long-range strike.

“Two goals - one long shot and one left-footed volley on his weak foot,” said Mulock.

“Jack’s was a long shot. I thought their keeper could have done a bit better.

“They’re a good side, to be fair to them, but we knew they haven’t been 1-0 down all season.

“We’ve come back from being 1-0 or 2-0 down three or four times this season, and that shows our heart and desire.

“But they haven’t been 1-0 down so we knew, as soon we got that one goal, [we would be okay]. We went in at half-time and they were bickering between themselves.

“It was exactly as we expected.”

There was still time for one more first-half opportunity apiece, which saw Dover Rangers skipper Luke Reeve head at keeper George Cronk and wideman Adam Baldwin fail to get his feet sorted.

But Dover Rangers had seen off Rochester City Reserves (5-2), Woodchurch FC (6-1), Woodnesborough Reserves (3-1) and Riverside (9-1) to get to this stage, and delivered an improved second-half display.

Half-time substitute Brylee Darcy nearly made an immediate impact when he was thwarted by Cronk from his header off a right-wing delivery with 51 minutes on the clock.

Cronk came to Old Roan’s rescue once more in the 57th minute to deny Baker.

But with time running out, and Old Roan players starting to struggle with cramp, they looked to kill the final as substitute Zak Woodman bent over the left-hand upright before Wing made a superb 86th-minute fingertip save.

There was still time for Rangers to push for what now would merely be a stoppage-time consolation goal, only for substitute Reece Rennock to shoot at Cronk and Baker to fail to hit the target.

They still have three more league fixtures to play this month and a Les & Sue Barcleycorn Challenge Cup final against Chilham that will be at Whitstable Town on Saturday, May 24.

On the same day, Old Roan are due to play their final league fixtures of the campaign, as well, with how tight-knit the squad is being evident due to their success.

Mulock said: “This is our first season as a team.

“A lot of us have had a couple of years off so this is our first season as a new team because the older boys retired.

“We’re all friends away from football. I think that shows on the pitch because we work hard for each other and we don’t let each other down.

“It’s really good to see.”
